The Commodore 64, often abbreviated as C64, is an 8-bit home computer introduced by Commodore International in 1982. It quickly became one of the best-selling personal computers of all time, with estimated sales exceeding 17 million units.
Processor: The C64 is powered by a MOS Technology 6510 microprocessor, operating at 1.023 MHz (PAL) or 0.985 MHz (NTSC).
Memory: It features 64 KB of RAM, which was substantial for its time.
Graphics: The C64 uses the VIC-II (Video Interface Chip), which supports a maximum resolution of 320x200 pixels and can display up to 16 colors simultaneously from a palette of 16.
Sound: Equipped with the SID (Sound Interface Device) chip, the C64 is renowned for its advanced sound capabilities, providing three channels of audio synthesis, which allowed for rich musical compositions and sound effects.
Storage: Data was primarily stored on external floppy disk drives (like the 1541), cassette tape drives, or later, on hard drives. The C64 also supported various cartridges.
The Commodore 64 features a compact and sturdy design, with a full-sized keyboard that includes function keys and a joystick port. The machine is known for its distinctive beige color and solid build quality.
The C64 supported a wide range of software, including productivity applications, programming languages (like BASIC), and an extensive library of games. It became famous for iconic titles such as "The Bard's Tale," "Elite," and "Maniac Mansion." The ease of programming in BASIC also contributed to its popularity among hobbyists and developers.
The C64's legacy is significant in the history of computing. It played a crucial role in popularizing home computing, introducing many users to programming and digital entertainment. Its affordability, extensive software library, and user-friendly design helped shape the landscape of personal computing in the 1980s.
The C64 has seen numerous revivals and emulations, reflecting its enduring popularity and influence on modern computing and gaming. Various projects and communities continue to celebrate the C64, keeping its spirit alive in contemporary culture.
